two painted Orioles in an embroidered circle on a new work of art from my Flora and Fauna series

Oriole_art_with_stitching.JPG

I took a few more photos of this recent work from my Flora and Fauna series while I was mounting it to mat board. It may be my favorite 2021 piece so far. I really like the intricacy of the drawn pattern and embroidered circle over the subtlety of the birds.

Its title, Gathering, was inspired by a nest we found earlier this year. During lockdown, when I was sewing some masks, I set fabric and thread scraps out in our garden. The found nest, which was designed to hang from branches (rather than rest on them) as Oriole nest do, held some of the fabric scraps Iā€™d left out.

This piece will be heading to Cappaert Contemporary Gallery on May 1. Sign up for studio emails for updates.
