Winter Studio Journal, Jan. 14, Colorful Painting and Starling Murmurations

I’m logging studio days here this month, experimenting with sharing more here and less on social media.

Continuing on with the theme of “everyday cathedral”, I painted a field of vivid color and a Starling yesterday.

It was this week last year that I was standing on the terrace of the Duomo Museum in Florence, Italy utterly mesmerized by the sight of a Starling murmuration. Yesterday, while painting this bird, I didn’t connect the timing but my subconscious mind certainly must have.

I’m fairly certain this piece will end up with a reference to the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), because this was the other view we had from that terrace.

Duomo in Florence Italy. The murmuration was in view opposite the cathedral.
