New Year in the Studio

Yesterday was my first day in the studio this year. We had some illness in our house at the very beginning of 2025 and I spent Friday, Jan. 3, delivering two works of art to a museum for an upcoming show.

But yesterday was a full studio day and it felt good to get back to work. I’m also doing an experiment this month and using this blog to document some of my process, sharing a few photos each day I’m in the studio working. I enjoy sharing some of my process online but am not feeling very enthusiastic about social media as of late.

Botticelli’s Primavera is one of the works I’m studying right now, specifically the way the background is handled. I’m also thinking of the ethereal quality of dragonflies and the gauzy fabric that drapes the Three Graces in this painting.

Transparent layers are an important part of my work as I like to reveal and obscure different areas of a piece.

Wishing you a happy start to 2025.
