in the air: fragility and possibility
There have been occasional moments in my life when I’ve felt a pure, untethered sense of freedom. Two of the most memorable came when I was walking alongside a highway. In those moments, with cars whizzing past at high speeds, the feeling of freedom was coupled with, or maybe a result of, a full awareness of the the fragility of life. Delicate flying creatures—insects, bees, cicadas, and birds—represent this in my work. They soar in the sky but are vulnerable to so many things: predators, weather changes, human development.
Flying creatures are symbolic of a number of things in my art but this one—freedom and fragility— came in to focus for me last week when when I was traveling by plan for the first time since before the initial Covid lock-downs began. I love to travel but am an anxious flyer and am acutely aware of the fragility of life whenever I’m up in the air. But I also sense vast possibility when I fly.
The abstract prints really speak to this with delicate brushwork and large areas of negative space.
Prints are still available for purchase in my shop. Since I have a small studio space without much room for excess inventory they are made to order (so you’ll receive a fresh off the press print!) which takes up to two weeks.
