Beginning a new series of paintings

flower arrangement with orange peony and yellow roses

I spent much of the weekend in my studio, working on a new project. It will be a series of paintings, probably for prints, inspired by Dutch floral painting and my love of flowers and insects.

My plan (hope!) is to get three paintings done over the next month and to the photographer early in the new year.

The photo at the top of this post is of a still life set up in my studio for the first painting.

I’m creating these paintings in gouache and acrylic. This first one is about two-thirds of the way done and painted in gouache, a medium in which I love working with layers. This image is a detail of the under painted layers.

Here is a glimpse of my palette during this stage of the painting process.

This last image is a detail image of part of the painting that is about two-thirds of the way finished.

I’ll share more glimpses of this painting, and the others, as they develop. While making plans for the new year, I’ve decided to focus on two bodies of mixed media work this winter, Conservatory and Resplendent. I made the first two works in the Resplendent series this past year and want to continue it in the new year.

Hope you are enjoying the holiday season and making your own plans for 2022.

January 14 Update: I explored this as a 30 Day Challenge and over the course of it the work evolved in a related, but different, direction. Most of the images from the thirty days (I’ve archived a few) can be seen on Instagram.
