Reception at SOMI Gallery

Dragonflies, Watercolor, graphite, and thread on paper

I’m excited to announce the reception on Friday, July 15, 4-6 p.m. for Resplendent, a show of my work in The Third Room gallery at SOMI Gallery in Sturgeon Bay, WI.

About the exhibition:

When I first saw The Third Room Gallery, it reminded me of a jewelry box, with its intimate setting and warm, dark walls. I’d already been studying historical jewelry designs because a friend mentioned that my gold bee pieces reminded her of the ancient Mesopotamian jewelry found at the Royal Cemetery at Ur. This research led me to the following quote from the exhibition website Jewelry: the Body Transformed at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art:

“[Jewelry] catches the light, attracts the eye, shines, reflects. When the conditions are right, it can be resplendent.”

This quote reflects what I see while watching dragonflies skimming across a pond, butterflies in flight, and our backyard bees, especially looking inside one of our hives with its shimmering honey and detailed honeycomb patterns. This work highlights delicate species and ecosystems and the feeling of walking into a jewelry box that holds a variety of shimmering things, some small and precious, others ornate and intricate.

Resplendent runs through August 27.
